Chastisements, NOX 3

So he said to himself:—“That military master!
Emperor-superman!
Before whom, through tempests, those great men ran faster
Barefoot, bugles in hand,

“Napoleon, fifteen years, through the storm’s repulse
South winds, and Boreal.
All kings bowed before him: he, trampling their skulls
They, kissing his heel;

“He seized Madrid, Berlin, Moscow, in the extravagance
Of his vast hope;
But I’ll do one better than that: I’ll seize France
My claws in her throat!

“All France, proud, is singing and marching in concord
To destinies still greater!
Whilst I slip behind her, throw over a strong cord
To asphyxiate her.

“We’ll divide history between us, my uncle and me,
Who’s the more cunning?
Me, of course! He gets all of that blank brass band glory,
I take the money.

“I’ll exploit his name, that fine empty frontage,
I inherited at birth, so.
A dwarf on giant shoulders: I’ve leave him the front page
I’m taking the verso.

“I’ll keep a tight hold on him! As Master now, I must.
By fate and by the law
He'll be my float in the ocean of history; or—aye!—just
Stuff him in my craw.

“Alley-cat though I am, I've an eagle in my grapple.
Though I’m down and he’s up
I seize him! I choose the anniversary of his great battle
To spring my trap.

“It’s fancy-dress day, and I’m the man who puts on
The uniform, under his gaze;
No one will see how I’m blotting the escutcheon
Of this most glorious of days.

“So much the better to seize my enemy, take things
In my murderous claws; all’s
Too easy--to hoodwink this France unsuspecting
At rest on its laurels.”—

So he came, dull-eyed; debauched and down-broken,
Furtive, untrusted. It's
A scandal this night-thief lit his grubby lantern
With the sun of Austerlitz!

III

Eux, baisant son talon;

Madrid, Berlin, Moscou;

Marche à son but sacré:

Nous nous partagerons, mon oncle et moi, l'histoire;

Je me cramponne à lui !

Je le tiens ! je choisis son grand anniversaire;

Le manteau sur ses yeux;
À ce jour glorieux;

J'irai plus aisément saisir mon ennemie
Dans mes poings meurtriers;
La France ce jour-là sera mieux endormie
Sur son lit de lauriers.» -
