BOOK I, 'Society Saved' 8: To a Martyr

From the Annals of the Propagation of the Faith: “A letter from Hong Kong (China), dated 24 July 1852, informs us that M. Bonnard, missionary at Tong-King, was decapitated for the Faith, last 1st May. This new martyr was born in the diocese of Lyon and was a member of the Society of Foreign Missionaries. He left for Tong-King in 1849.”

.I.
Saintly priest! Great soul! Oh! I kneel! Young as
He was, and with many more years here among us—
…….((How many, how can man know?)
Yet though at that age when happiness is highest
He thought higher still of his Lord Jesus Christ
……. Who shines bright in the shadow.

Saying: “Progress and Love are the names of my God
And my Jesus’ face is the day, smiling broad
…….Upon those who eschew him.
He died for us; I’ll die for him, though alone;
From his tomb, as I shoulder his burial stone,
…….He’s softly calling me to him.

He teaches us heaven’s half-open: he guides
All of us hand-in-hand with a fatherly pride:
…….In Him we live—we are we;
The gaolers are home in their beds and all dozing
Whilst He steals the keys to the cells we are closed in
…….Sets the prisoners free.

There is, far from here, other peoples—our kin—
Who don’t understand this, who live in their sin
…….Crawl in chains—suffer doom—fall;
They make tenebrous efforts to discover God
They struggle in vain; they resemble the dead
…….Blindly groping their tomb-wall.

They lack law, have no goals, no guide, therefore they err;
They are wicked, because they are ignorant; were
…….Passed over when truth first spread.
I’m going! To save them I’ll leave Christian land
O Brothers, I’m bringing you God in my hand,
…….I am bringing you my head!’

Priest, we remember in these troubled days
What He told his followers: go you each your ways
…….Brave the butchers and snares.
Remembering Christ and his crowning farewell
Brothers, love one another! In love you will heal
…….Wounds my body bears.

It is said it’s a good thing to shine in the dark
These stray ones live so far from progress’s spark
…….Their souls are veiled and barred;
So he travelled through the winds and across the salt flood
To black scaffolds, to headsman-blocks covered in blood
…….His eyes fixed on the stars.

.II.
Those to whom this apostle went have cut his throat.

.III.
Oh! you’re down there amongst those savage shunned-ones
And your heavy limbs have been spread on the rack
The headsman, arranging his blades and his truncheons
Scrapes nails on the block where your blood stains it black;

Oh, Heavens! Now dogs come to lap up the blood
And rapidly buzzing, the flies all comes flocking
To crawl through the door of your mouth in the mud
And drone at the sun in your empty eye-socket;

Now you’re broken and voiceless, they’ve cut off your eyelids,
Your whitened head lies in the pit where it dropped
Affronted, hacked up by the stone axe that sliced it,
Hey! Martyr! Behind you! They’re selling your God!

Of course it’s our God, not just yours, that they’re stealing
Shipped to Mandrin—this God that your life ended for
You’re in your shroud; meanwhile they’re double-dealing
So they can be cardinals, or senators.

Priests who want palaces, carriage-and-horses
And plush summer gardens beneath bluer skies
To silver their mitres and gold-plate their crosses
To drink the best wine, by the best firesides.

Like a pirate, their hands are fair reeking with blood!
Like thieves, rich and grinning, their souls are cut-priced
O dear priest—please come home, though you're lacking your head!
They’re selling off Christ! They’re selling off Christ!

These bandits will grab, for a few sacks of cash,
The Gospel, the Law, God’s own altar sublime
And Justice, her fair eyes sharp and unabashed,
And Truth itself too, starry heart of mankind.

Good men must be killed, or locked up, no reprieve,
The honourable man? Scylla bans him: it’s exile.
The innocents get their throats cut; widow’s grief
And the tears of the orphan are both put up for sale.

Everything! Faith, oath, God’s own sanctity
The temple, where you said Introibo ... and died;
They’re selling it all—virtue and modesty
Re-open your eyes shining with the tomb’s light.

They’re selling the Ark where the Host itself gleams!
They selling off Christ, I say, trussed-up with bands!
They’re selling the sweat that poured from him in streams
And the nails in his feet; and the nails in his hands!

They sell to a brigand who (for his part) whirs them
These slant men of trade, the great Crucified One
They’re selling his speeches, and his great martyrdom
Yours too, brave priest, where the trading is done.

So much for the whipping, the pain he went through there
So much for the stone that was hurled at his head
Caesar! So much for amen, or for hallelujah
So much for the rag that wiped his beard's spilt red.

They’re selling his bruised knees, his palm-leaf of green,
The wound in his side, his eye’s infinite stare
His tears and his pain, his half-open mouth’s scream
His Lamma Sabactini cry of despair

They’re selling the sepulchre—selling the gloom
The angels who sing on the edge of deep skies
And, beneath branches, his mother, her funeral arms
Who in sensing her son is near, lowers her eyes.

Yes, they’re selling—these bishops and tradesmen and priests—
To this Thespian of crime, self-appointed ad hoc,
To this Nero who laughs with his treacherous beasts
Kicking Thraseas with foot, poking Phryne with his—elbow.

To this thief who has bludgeoned the Law with a Cross
To this emperor-pirate, Napoleon the Final, who's
Twice drunk, more abject than he ever was fierce
Pig in filth—and a wolf in the world's charnel-house.

They’re selling, O Martyr, God—pensive and white
He who stands on the earth and beneath the bright stars
Sadly smiling on us, through our long fatal night
In this endlessly blood-soaked and black Golgotha.

I

…….Il n'en a pas compté le nombre;
Il était à cet âge où le bonheur fleurit;

Puisqu'il est mort pour nous, je veux mourir pour lui ;

Comme un père l'enfant, il tient le genre humain;
…….Par lui nous vivons et nous sommes;

…….Rampe enchaînée, et souffre et tombe;
Ils font pour trouver Dieu de ténébreux efforts;

…….Dont l'âme est couverte de voiles;

Frotte au gibet son ongle où ton sang s'est figé;

Et bourdonne au soleil dans les trous de tes yeux;

Ici, derrière toi, martyr, on vend ton Dieu!

Ils vendent Jésus-Christ ! ils vendent Jésus-Christ!

Le grand crucifié sur les hommes penché;
